Antonio Conte to Man United? Carrick Under Pressure
Antonio Conte has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United, with reports from Italy claiming that the former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager is close to reaching an agreement with the club.
The speculation has intensified following United’s disappointing 2–0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, October 13. The result extended the Red Devils’ winless run to five matches across all competitions and increased scrutiny on Carrick’s position.
However, despite the growing rumours, there has been no official announcement that Manchester United intend to dismiss Carrick or appoint Conte as his replacement.
Antonio Conte Linked With Manchester United Job
According to Italian reports, negotiations over Conte potentially taking charge at Old Trafford have progressed, with the experienced Italian reportedly open to returning to a major European club.
Conte is currently available after leaving Napoli at the end of last season. He has an impressive managerial record, having won league titles with Juventus, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Napoli.
His Premier League experience could make him an attractive option for United if the club decides to change direction. During his time at Chelsea, Conte won the 2016–17 Premier League title, introducing a successful three-man defensive system that helped transform the team’s performances.
He also managed Tottenham Hotspur, guiding the north London club to Champions League qualification during the 2021–22 season.
Conte is known for demanding high standards, tactical discipline and intense work from his players. Those qualities could appeal to United as they attempt to recover from their difficult start to the campaign.
Michael Carrick’s Future Under Scrutiny
Carrick’s position has become a major talking point after Manchester United’s latest European setback. Atlético Madrid scored through Pablo Barrios inside the opening minute before Ademola Lookman added a second goal in the second half.
United’s problems were compounded when Leny Yoro was sent off, leaving the visitors with ten players as they struggled to recover.
The defeat followed a disappointing run of domestic results, including a 1–1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. United have also endured their worst Premier League start in decades, putting additional pressure on the coaching staff.
Despite the criticism, reports on Wednesday indicated that the club’s hierarchy continued to support Carrick. Fabrizio Romano reported that United had not contacted alternative managerial candidates and were not preparing an immediate change.
This directly contrasts with the reports from Italy suggesting that Conte is close to an agreement.
Will Conte Replace Carrick at Old Trafford?
For now, Manchester United supporters must wait for clarity. Conte’s availability and managerial history make him a credible name in the discussion, but reports of an imminent agreement remain unconfirmed.
The club’s upcoming results could prove important as Carrick attempts to turn the situation around. United face mounting expectations from supporters who want to see improved performances and a return to consistent winning football.
Whether the club ultimately turns to Conte or continues with Carrick remains uncertain. What is clear is that the Atlético defeat has intensified the debate surrounding United’s managerial future.
Until Manchester United or Conte confirms a deal, the Italian should be regarded as a reported candidate rather than the club’s incoming manager.
