Ballon d’Or B.O.A.T. Vote: Messi, Ronaldo and 8 Legends
The Ballon d’Or B.O.A.T. vote features Messi, Ronaldo and eight legends, with Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly leading the early fan poll.
Messi, Ronaldo and Legends Named in Ballon d’Or B.O.A.T. Vote
Football fans have been given another chance to debate the greatest players in history after 10 legendary names were included in the Ballon d’Or B.O.A.T. competition, a fan vote celebrating some of the most memorable individual seasons in football.
The list features Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Marco van Basten, Johan Cruyff, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Michel Platini, Ronaldo Nazário, Kevin Keegan and Franz Beckenbauer.
The competition, whose name stands for Ballon d’Or of All Time, focuses on historic Ballon d’Or-winning campaigns rather than simply asking supporters to select their favourite player. It brings together generations of football greatness, from the early years of the award to the modern era dominated by Messi and Ronaldo.
The 10 Ballon d’Or B.O.A.T. contenders
The shortlist includes some of the most decorated individual talents the sport has produced. Messi has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, while Ronaldo has claimed the honour on five occasions.
Dutch legends Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten each won the award three times. Michel Platini also collected three Ballon d’Or trophies, while Di Stéfano, Beckenbauer, Keegan, Rummenigge and Brazilian icon Ronaldo Nazário each won it twice.
Every contender has a compelling case. Messi's extraordinary consistency and creative influence defined an era, while Ronaldo combined elite goalscoring with success across England, Spain and Italy. Cruyff transformed how many people understood attacking football, and Beckenbauer helped redefine the role of the sweeper.
Van Basten and Platini delivered outstanding individual campaigns, while Di Stéfano was a central figure in Real Madrid's early European dominance. Keegan and Rummenigge also enjoyed periods when they stood among the very best players in the world.
Cristiano Ronaldo leads Messi in the early vote
According to reporting published on October 19, Ronaldo's 2008 Manchester United season was leading the B.O.A.T. fan vote with a reported 62 per cent of votes, compared with 13 per cent for Messi's 2012 campaign.
Those figures represent an early snapshot, not a final result. The reported voting deadline is October 27, with results expected on October 28.
Ronaldo's 2008 campaign was memorable: he scored 42 goals across all competitions and helped Manchester United win both the Premier League and Champions League. Messi's 2012 season, meanwhile, remains famous for his extraordinary goalscoring output.
The voting format and its reported paid-vote structure have also prompted questions about how closely the leaderboard reflects a purely sporting judgement. The early standings should therefore not be treated as a definitive verdict on the greatest season.
Who deserves to win?
The debate is likely to divide supporters across generations. Some will favour Messi's record-breaking numbers, others will choose Ronaldo's goals and decisive performances, while fans of earlier eras may argue that legends such as Cruyff, Di Stéfano or Beckenbauer deserve greater recognition.
Ultimately, comparing players from different periods is difficult because football, tactics, competition formats and the award's voting environment have changed significantly.
Who would you choose as the winner of the Ballon d’Or B.O.A.T. vote: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or one of the eight other legends?
