Chris Smalling to FC Porto: From Non-League Football to a Champions League Return
Chris Smalling is on the verge of a surprise return to European football, with FC Porto agreeing a deal to sign the experienced English centre-back as a free agent.
The 36-year-old has reportedly completed the key steps towards the move, with his medical underway before he puts pen to paper on his Porto contract. The transfer comes after Smalling left Saudi Arabian side Al-Fayha and spent the summer as a free agent.
From Non-League Football to Manchester United
Smalling's journey to the top of football has been anything but ordinary.
He began his senior career with Maidstone United after developing through Millwall's system before earning his opportunity in professional football with Fulham in 2008.
His performances at Craven Cottage quickly attracted attention, and Manchester United moved to secure his services in 2010.
At Old Trafford, Smalling spent almost a decade competing at the highest level, playing under managers including Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
He won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League during his Manchester United career and became a regular figure in the club's defence.
Roma Revived His Career
In 2019, Smalling moved to AS Roma initially on loan before making the transfer permanent.
Italy proved to be an important chapter in his career. He became a key part of Roma's defence and made 155 appearances, scoring 10 goals for the Italian club.
His biggest moment came under José Mourinho in 2022 when Roma defeated Feyenoord to win the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League. Smalling was named Player of the Match in the final.
Saudi Arabia Before Porto
Smalling's next destination was Saudi Arabia.
Roma confirmed his permanent move to Al-Fayha in September 2024, bringing his successful four-year spell in Italy to an end. He spent two seasons with the Saudi club before becoming a free agent in 2026.
After leaving Al-Fayha, Smalling reportedly took his time over his next move, saying in August that he wanted to find a project that suited both his role on the pitch and what he could offer away from it.
Porto Offer Him a New European Chapter
That project now appears to be Porto.
The Portuguese giants have turned to Smalling for experience and defensive depth, particularly with injuries affecting their centre-back options. Reports indicate that he is set to sign a short-term deal, with an option for another season.
The move also gives Smalling another opportunity to compete in European football and potentially add another chapter to an extraordinary career that began in non-league football.
From Maidstone to Manchester, Rome to Saudi Arabia — and now Porto. Chris Smalling's journey is taking another unexpected turn.
