Jorge Jesus Ends Ronaldo Drama: “He Did Not Refuse to Train”

Jorge Jesus has moved to calm the storm surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal, insisting there is no major problem between the pair and firmly rejecting reports that the captain refused to train.

The controversy erupted after Ronaldo was left as an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2–1 Nations League victory over Norway. Reports of tension followed, with Ronaldo subsequently missing the team’s next training sessions and completing individual gym work instead.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Denmark, Jesus directly addressed the speculation.

The Portugal coach said Ronaldo “did not refuse to train”, explaining that his absence from the team sessions was part of his physical programme. Jesus also indicated that Ronaldo had returned to normal training.

That clarification is significant because earlier reports had portrayed the situation as a possible confrontation between the Portugal captain and his new manager. The Portuguese Football Federation had also said Ronaldo was carrying out gym work at the team hotel because the training venue did not have the equipment required for his individual programme.

Ronaldo Accepts Whatever Decision Jesus Makes

Jesus also revealed what Ronaldo told him when they discussed the situation.

According to the Portugal boss, Ronaldo made it clear that he would respect his manager’s decision, whether that meant starting, sitting on the bench or watching from the stands.

“If you want me to play, I’ll play. If you want me to sit on the bench, I will. If you want me in the stands, I will.”

The comments provide a very different picture from reports suggesting Ronaldo was unwilling to accept Jesus' authority.

“I Don’t Have Just One Player”

Jesus then delivered perhaps the clearest message of the entire saga.

“I don't have just one player. I have 23 players. Our mission is to win the Nations League. Cristiano Ronaldo is not the main reason I'm here. Denmark is.”

The statement underlines Jesus' approach to the Portugal squad: Ronaldo remains an important member of the team, but the coach's focus is on the collective objective rather than one individual.

What Actually Happened?

Ronaldo's frustration after being left on the bench against Norway has been widely reported. He warmed up during the match but was never introduced, and he went straight down the tunnel at the final whistle rather than joining his teammates in acknowledging the travelling supporters.

Portuguese media subsequently reported that Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença travelled to Copenhagen earlier than planned amid the situation. RTP later reported that Ronaldo and Jesus had spoken again and resolved their disagreement.

However, the claim that Ronaldo refused to train has now been explicitly rejected by Jesus, while the federation has maintained that Ronaldo was completing individual work.

With Denmark next, the Ronaldo drama is now giving way to the football itself.

The headlines may have been about Ronaldo and Jesus — but the Portugal boss has made his message clear: 23 players, one mission, and Denmark is the priority.
