Manchester City Found Guilty: City Vow to Prove Innocence
Manchester City have been found guilty of serious Premier League financial breaches, but chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak insists the club will fight back with evidence and appeal the verdict.
Manchester City Found Guilty: City Vow to Fight Back and Prove Their Innocence
Manchester City’s long-running financial battle with the Premier League has reached a dramatic new chapter after an independent commission found the club guilty of serious breaches of the league’s financial regulations.
The verdict relates to allegations covering a nine-season period between 2009/10 and 2017/18. The Premier League said the commission found City guilty of all charges relating to serious financial breaches, as well as the majority of charges concerning the club’s failure to cooperate with the investigation.
A Verdict That Shook English Football
The findings centre on allegations that Manchester City used commercial arrangements that misrepresented the true agreements with sponsors, artificially inflated revenues and reduced costs. The Premier League also said the commission found the club had submitted misstated accounts and breached spending limits.
The case, which began with charges being formally brought in 2023 after a lengthy investigation, has now entered another crucial stage — with Manchester City expected to appeal.
City Chairman Sends Strong Message to Fans
Despite the verdict, Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has remained defiant.
In a message to supporters, Al Mubarak insisted that the club’s confidence in proving its innocence remains as strong as it was when the case began. He also explained that strict legal confidentiality prevents City from publicly revealing all of the evidence it says supports its position.
The club has previously said it possesses a “comprehensive body” of evidence supporting its position, while maintaining that it has always denied the allegations.
City Promise Evidence in Appeal
Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano has also strongly rejected the commission’s findings, saying the club will appeal.
Soriano claimed City had provided evidence including bank statements, money transfers and witness testimony to support its argument concerning the disputed sponsorship arrangements. He said the club’s legal team believes the decision contains significant errors of law, principle and fact.
For City, therefore, the verdict is not being treated as the end of the battle.
What Happens Next?
The punishment has yet to be determined, with possible sanctions potentially including a fine, points deduction or other sporting penalties. The appeal process could also delay any final consequences.
For Manchester City supporters, the coming months could be among the most important in the club’s modern history.
A historic verdict has been delivered — but Manchester City are making it clear that they believe the final chapter has not yet been written.
