Portugal vs Norway: Ronaldo Unused as Portugal Win 2-1
Portugal beat Norway 2-1 in the Nations League as João Félix and Gonçalo Ramos score. Cristiano Ronaldo remains an unused substitute for the first time in a competitive Portugal match since 2008.
Portugal Win Without Ronaldo: A Night of History in Oslo
Portugal continued their perfect start to the UEFA Nations League with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Norway in Oslo, but the biggest talking point came from the Portugal bench.
For the first time in more than 18 years, Cristiano Ronaldo remained an unused substitute in a competitive match for Portugal.
The legendary captain watched the entire game from the sidelines as Portugal coach Jorge Jesus opted to start Gonçalo Ramos up front. It was a remarkable sight for a player who has been such a constant presence in Portugal's biggest matches.
Portugal made the perfect start when João Félix opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a composed finish from the edge of the box. Norway responded after the break, with Erling Haaland finding the equaliser and giving the hosts fresh hope.
But Portugal quickly regained control.
Just four minutes after Haaland's equaliser, Gonçalo Ramos pounced on a costly mistake from Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland to restore Portugal's lead. Ramos thought he had added another later in the match, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside.
Norway pushed hard for another equaliser, but Portugal held on to claim all three points.
And while Ronaldo's absence dominated the headlines, the victory showed that Portugal still have plenty of attacking options beyond their iconic number seven.
Jorge Jesus had reportedly planned to introduce Ronaldo for the final half-hour, but the flow of the match and Ramos' performance changed those plans. The manager later described the decision as a tactical choice, rather than an issue of Ronaldo's fitness.
The night therefore became historic for two reasons: Portugal maintained their winning run, while Ronaldo experienced an extraordinarily rare role — watching his country complete a competitive victory without stepping onto the pitch.
The last time he was an unused substitute in a competitive Portugal match was against Switzerland at Euro 2008, more than 18 years ago.
Portugal won in Oslo. Ramos delivered. Ronaldo watched. And history was quietly made.
