The League Phase: Early Points Matter

The Europa League's league phase gives each club eight games against different opponents, and the final table decides who goes straight to the knockouts and who has to play off. Rennes opened with a goalless draw at Sturm Graz, while OFI began with their win over Hoffenheim. After tonight, OFI host Bayer Leverkusen on 22 October, visit Hapoel Be'er Sheva on 5 November, host Anderlecht on 26 November, travel to Benfica on 10 December, visit Sturm Graz on 21 January and finish at home to Lech Poznań on 28 January.

Rennes also face Olympiacos at home on 5 November, so this is the first of several home chances.

Rennes: Home Comfort After a Slow European Start

Rennes finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season and are back in the Europa League for the first time since 2023-24. Head coach Franck Haise is looking to end a long run of frustration in the competition, and the 4-1 win over Auxerre on Sunday was ideal preparation for this game.

They are unbeaten at home in Ligue 1 this season, with three wins and a draw from four matches. Estéban Lepaul has taken 24 shots in Ligue 1, twice as many as any other Rennes player. There are no injury or suspension concerns, which is a boost.

OFI Crete: Cup Winners Making History

OFI Crete are in the league phase for the first time in the club's history. They reached it by beating CSKA Sofia by five goals on aggregate, and then beat Hoffenheim in the opener, with former Barcelona youngster Aitor Cantalapiedra scoring in a 2-0 win.

Domestic form has been less convincing. OFI have not won either of their two Greek Super League games since the Hoffenheim victory, and they have scored only two goals in their previous four competitive away games. They finished seventh in the Greek league last season. Three players are out injured: Christos Sielis, Aaron Leya Iseka and Nikolaos Marinakis.

Head-to-Head

Rennes and OFI have never met. Rennes won both of their previous games against Greek opponents, which adds a little confidence, but with no history to draw on, form and home advantage matter most.

Key Battles to Watch

1. Lepaul against OFI's goalkeeper. Rennes's main shooter faces Nikolaos Christogeorgos, who has made at least four saves in six of his last eight games.

2. OFI's counter-attacks. Cantalapiedra's pace and creativity could cause problems if Rennes push forward.

3. Rennes's first home European game in two years. The crowd at Roazhon Park will be loud, and Rennes will want to use it.

4. OFI's away record. Two goals in four competitive away games is a concern for the visitors.

Team News

Confirmed line-ups were not available at the time of writing. Rennes have no injuries or suspensions, while OFI are without Sielis, Leya Iseka and Marinakis. Starting XIs are announced about an hour before kick-off. Follow updates on the live score808 match page.
