Ronaldo Drama Erupts: Portugal Captain Misses Training After Norway Snub
The tension surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal has taken another dramatic turn after the captain missed a team training session following his surprise omission from the pitch against Norway.
Ronaldo was an unused substitute as Portugal defeated Norway 2–1 in the UEFA Nations League, despite head coach Jorge Jesus telling him before the match that he expected to bring him on. Ronaldo warmed up during the game but ultimately remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes.
The frustration appeared to continue after the final whistle. While his teammates celebrated with the travelling Portuguese supporters, Ronaldo headed straight to the dressing room.
Then came Tuesday's training session.
Ronaldo travelled with the Portuguese squad to the training ground in Malmö and initially stepped onto the pitch, but he did not train with the rest of the team. He instead returned to the hotel for an individual gym session. The Portuguese Football Federation said the hotel session was part of a specific training programme because the stadium did not have the equipment required.
The situation immediately sparked speculation about Ronaldo's relationship with Jorge Jesus, particularly after the manager's decision to leave his captain on the bench against Norway.
With Portugal preparing for their next Nations League match against Denmark, the situation became serious enough for Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, to bring forward his trip to Copenhagen. Reports said Proença wanted to help mediate the situation involving Ronaldo and Jesus.
However, before Proença's arrival could lead to a three-way intervention, Ronaldo and Jesus held a private meeting at the team hotel. Portuguese reports described the conversation as positive, with both sides moving towards resolving the apparent disagreement.
The drama adds another chapter to an extraordinary few days for Ronaldo. After making history by becoming an unused substitute in a competitive Portugal match for the first time since Euro 2008, the 41-year-old captain now finds himself at the centre of attention ahead of the Denmark clash.
Portugal remain top of their Nations League group with six points, but all eyes will now be on Jorge Jesus' team selection — and, most importantly, whether Ronaldo returns to the starting lineup.
One benching. One missed training session. One urgent meeting. The Ronaldo story has taken another dramatic turn.
