The League Phase: No Room for a Second Slip

The Champions League's league phase gives each club eight games against different opponents, and the final table decides who goes straight to the knockouts and who plays off. After one round, Villarreal sit 22nd with no points and a goal difference of minus one, while Napoli are 27th, also without points, on minus one as well.

Villarreal's schedule continues with games on 20 October, 3 November, 25 November, 8 December, 20 January and 27 January, so there is time to recover, but not much.

Villarreal: A Young Squad With Home Advantage

Villarreal lost 3-2 on 8 September, a result that showed both their attacking quality and their defensive problems. Their squad list on UEFA's site includes teenagers such as Pablo Polo (19), Carlos Macià (18) and Álvaro Alcaide (18), which points to a team that is increasingly built around young talent.

The Cerámica has been a tough place for visitors for years, and Villarreal will aim to use that home atmosphere to turn their opening defeat into a positive reaction.

Napoli: Injury Problems at the Back

Napoli lost 1-0 in their opener on 9 September, then played in Serie A on 13 September. Their team news is a concern. Reported absentees include defenders Buongiorno, Mazzocchi and Marianucci, all with knee injuries, while Marín and midfielder Folorunsho are doubtful. That leaves coaches with a tough choice at the back for a trip to Spain.

Napoli are an experienced side in European competition, and they will see this as a game they must win to avoid falling behind early.

Head-to-Head: Perfectly Balanced

The two clubs have met five times in European competition, and the record is even: two wins each and a draw.

• 25 February 2016: Napoli v Villarreal (Europa League)
• 18 February 2016: Villarreal v Napoli (Europa League)
• 7 December 2011: Villarreal v Napoli (Champions League)
• 27 September 2011: Napoli v Villarreal (Champions League)
• 24 February 2011: Villarreal v Napoli (Europa League)

I couldn't confirm the scores of those games, but the overall record is evenly split, which suggests a close contest.

Key Battles to Watch

1. Napoli's makeshift defence. With three defenders reported out, Villarreal's attackers will see chances.

2. Villarreal's own defence. Conceding three on opening night shows they can be vulnerable.

3. The Cerámica crowd. A passionate home atmosphere can help a young squad find its rhythm.

4. Pressure to respond. Neither side can afford a second defeat, so the early minutes could be cagey.

Team News

Prediction: Villarreal vs Napoli

Home advantage and Napoli's injury problems give Villarreal a slight edge, but Napoli's European pedigree means this should be close. Our pick is a narrow Villarreal win, with a draw very possible. Please gamble responsibly, and only where it is legal.
